Learn how to hand-roll sushi, take a kendo class with a descendant of a real samurai warrior, watch giant robots dance in Tokyo, go in search of geishas in Kyoto's Gion district, explore incredible temples, sample world-famous food and stay in a real, traditional Japanese temple. Due to popular demand, this is the extension of our incredibly popular 10-day Japan trip. If you have more than 10 days, don't let the adventure end in Osaka, join us and travel on to Hiroshima, Koyasan and the magical island of Miyajima. This itinerary covers some of the most famous areas of Japan and takes you off the beaten track. By the end of this journey, you will have truly experienced the Land of the Rising Sun. You'll stay in a Buddhist monastery in Koyasan, visit the stunning gardens of Osaka Castle, meet the friendly local wildlife in Nara and learn about the devastating history of Hiroshima with a local guide. Land in Tokyo! Arrive at your accommodation in Tokyo and relax until the evening. Tonight we'll take you out to indulge in Japanese cuisine and get to know the rest of your group. After dinner, when the crowds have dispersed, we'll explore the famous Senso-ji temple in Tokyo by night!

We start the morning with an orientation briefing for Japan. You will learn simple Japanese customs and phrases to help you find your way around the country. We then head off to the birthplace of Japanese teen pop culture, Harajuku. We then head to Yoyogi Park, where the beautiful Meiji Shrine is located. Then we head to Akihabara - Tokyo's electric city - to be dazzled by all the neon lights and crazy shops. You can challenge each other in the arcades, visit the famous Maid Cafes or simply stroll around the neighbourhood.

In the morning after breakfast, we'll set off on our own private sushi course! You will learn how to make miso soup, three types of sushi and the secrets of teriyaki! A vegetarian option is possible, but you must inform your tour guide/One Life one week before the start of the tour. Tonight we'll head to Shinjuku where we'll see the unrivalled Tokyo skyline, visit the famous Omoide Yokocho alley and have dinner before seeing the famous Shibuya pedestrian bridge.

Today we'll be travelling on the aptly named "Romance Car" to the stunning mountain town of Hakone. After checking into our guesthouse in the mountains, we'll spend the day exploring the surrounding area using a variety of transport options. Why is Hakone so special? Well, not only is the food incredible, but so are the spectacular views of Mount Fuji (weather permitting). After a day of exploring and taking photos of Japan's most famous mountain, we'll have a traditional Japanese nabe family dinner at our guesthouse and finish the day with some games.

Today is the day we travel on the world-famous Shinkansen for the first time. Watch them fly by on the platform before boarding one of the fastest trains in the world.
Look out for Mt Fuji on the way. The first stop is the UNESCO World Heritage city of Takayama. Here we will spend the night in an impressive temple. In the afternoon, we will sample sake at a local brewery and you can even treat yourself to the famous Hida beef!

Start the morning with a walk through the beautiful old town and village of Takayama and a visit to the morning market on the banks of the Miyagawa River. We then take the high-speed train to Kyoto. In the evening, a local guide will lead us through Kyoto's Gion neighbourhood, which is known for its geisha (Japan's traditional entertainment art) - if you're lucky, you might even see one.

We get up before sunrise and take the underground to Fushimi-Inari Shrine. We arrive early to avoid the tourist crowds and work our way through the mountain and explore the endless red gates. We then make our way to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, one of the most famous temples in Japan. A breathtaking complex made of bamboo and wood, perched high in the mountains. Finally, we take part in a traditional tea ceremony, where you can even borrow kimonos!

We make our way to the breathtaking Golden Pavilion, a beautiful golden building surrounded by a lake. We then head to Daitoku-ji, a tranquil, leafy complex of ancient temples. In the afternoon, we take part in a traditional kendo class in the dojo where it all began. Your authentic Bushido teacher, a descendant of a Japanese samurai, will show you the way of this respectful martial art.

The day begins with a train journey to Arashiyama, a town surrounded by mountains with a river running through it. The programme includes a visit to the bamboo forest, a climb up Monkey Mountain and a traditional Japanese boat trip through the valleys. We then continue to Osaka, where we explore the famous Dotonbori neighbourhood in the evening. We will get to know the food, the people, the lights and the colours of the "cuisine of Japan" before ending the tour with karaoke in the evening.

After you've recovered from last night's exertions, we think it's best to give yourself the morning to explore Osaka for yourself. Visit the incredibly trendy AmericaTown, stroll through the Shinsaibashi shopping district, give your body a well-earned break at Spa World or browse the wonderful world of electronics in Den-Den Town. In the evening, we'll meet up and make our way to Osaka Castle, a beautiful structure in the centre of the city surrounded by lush gardens. From here we will watch the sunset before travelling to Dotonbori's little brother, Shinsekai, for dinner.

An early start today as we leave the city and travel 45 minutes by train to beautiful Nara. As we leave the station and make our way to the main park, keep your eyes peeled for the friendly locals along the way. Nara is famous for being a city that lives in symbiosis with the deer and is of historical significance as the former capital of ancient Japan.
We explore the tranquil park and stunning temples before heading back to Osaka to collect our luggage and make our way to Koyasan. After a 90-minute journey on a mixture of cable car and bus, we arrive at our accommodation deep in the heart of the mountain. Koyasan is a beautiful little temple town, summarised by the tourism authority's slogan: "If nature truly brings humanity closer to the cosmos, then Koyasan is its embodiment". This is your chance to experience life in a real, working temple. Learn about the monks who dedicate their lives to this area and wander through the countless temples and shrines dotted around the area. Dinner is a very special vegetarian meal prepared from ingredients sourced from the monks in the area.

Wake up in the morning to the sounds of nature and take part in the morning prayers with the monks. Breakfast is a traditional "temple meal" prepared by the monks. Make the most of your last morning in this unforgettable place. Shortly before lunch, we make our way back to Osaka and take the high-speed train to Hiroshima.
After a 90-minute ride, we take the tram to our accommodation in the city centre. After a short breather, we walk to Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and let our local guide lead us through the area to learn more about the city's amazing past. See the atomic dome, ring the peace bell and say a prayer at the eternal flame. This incredibly important city will stay in your memory for a long time.
Finally, we take a tour of the museum to learn more about Hiroshima's devastating past before grabbing something to eat and rounding off the evening.

Today we take the underground to the beautiful island of Miyajima, which is only 1 hour away from Hiroshima. Upon arrival, we'll take a ferry to the island, which is known for its stunning forests and ancient temples. After disembarking the ferry, we'll take a walk around the island and visit the incredible Great Torii Gate, located just off the coast. This famous giant, orange-coloured torii gate is partially submerged at high tide. Afterwards, you have the afternoon at leisure to explore the tranquillity of this island paradise. In the evening, we set off as a group for the last time to spend our last day in Japan.
