Vietnam is increasingly winning the hearts of travellers and is becoming an ever more popular destination. The country impresses with its beautiful natural landscapes and gorgeous beaches, while city lovers can experience the hustle and bustle of Southeast Asia in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh. To make the most of your holiday to Vietnam, it is important to consider the seasons and climate zones.

Below you will find everything you need to know about the different seasons and travelling times in Vietnam.

The different climate zones

Vietnam can be divided into three different climate zones: northern, central and southern Vietnam. Depending on the region, different weather conditions must be taken into account.

It should be noted that the rainy season takes place at different times in different parts of the country and therefore temperatures and rainfall vary greatly depending on the region.

Climate in northern Vietnam

The climate in northern Vietnam is characterised by hot summers and cold winters. In the summer months, temperatures can rise to over 30°C, and from May to October there is also a rainy season. During this time, there can often be heavy rainfall and flooding in northern Vietnam. Due to the high humidity, many Europeans avoid Central Vietnam at this time, but this time of year is ideal for nature lovers as the vegetation is in full bloom.

From November to April, rainfall is lower and the dry season is characterised by mild temperatures. During the cool and dry winter months in northern Vietnam, temperatures range from 14 to 22°C, although it can of course get colder in mountainous regions.

Climate in central Vietnam

The popular coastal town of Da Nang and the holiday resort of Hoi An are located in central Vietnam. The tropical, alternating humid climate is typical of this part of the country. The summer months are characterised by hot temperatures of over 30°C and few rainy days. The temperatures rise.

The rainy season begins here in autumn and October and November are characterised by heavy showers and sometimes typhoons. Due to the increased occurrence of landslides and flooding, caution is advised when visiting during the rainy season. It is slightly cooler between February and May with an average of 24 to 28°C, which is why most holidaymakers choose these months to visit Central Vietnam.

Climate in southern Vietnam

The south of Vietnam is hot and humid all year round. High temperatures cannot be avoided here, the most pleasant being from November to January with highs of 30°C. At the same time, rainfall is also slightly lower, making winter a warm and dry season in the south.

The rainy season begins in May, temperatures rise to 35°C and it only cools down to 22°C at night. The period with the most rainy days is from July to October, with short but heavy rain showers in the afternoons. The air is very humid and hot, which is something to bear in mind if you are planning hikes or sports activities.
