When is the best time to travel to Thailand?

Thailand, the land of smiles, is one of the most popular destinations in Southeast Asia. As a safe solo travel destination, Thailand is often one of the first long-haul destinations. The best time to travel to Thailand depends on various factors, such as climate, planned activities and personal preferences.

To make the most of your holiday, here's everything you need to know about the seasons and climate in Thailand.

Rainy season & dry season in Thailand

In Thailand, there are no four seasons as we know them from Europe; instead, the year is divided into rainy and dry seasons. However, temperatures and rainfall can vary greatly depending on the region.

The dry season lasts from November to February, the temperatures are rather pleasant and there are few rainy days. July to October is the rainy season. Although the amount of rainfall is significantly higher, it is mostly heavy but short showers in the afternoon. At this time of year, nature is in full bloom and the famous rice fields are a brilliant green.

Northern Thailand

Chiang Mai is one of the best-known and most popular cities in northern Thailand. In this region, temperatures rise to 40°C from March to May, which is why this time is often avoided. This is followed by the rainy season, which lasts until around October. Heavy rain showers are often a welcome cool-down at around 30°C. Due to the amount of rainfall, many tourists avoid this time of year, which, however, creates ideal conditions for a budget holiday.

It is pleasantly cool in northern Thailand during the European winter, with temperatures sometimes even dropping to 14°C at night. At the same time, the humidity is significantly lower as it is the dry season between November and February. This time of year is particularly suitable for hikers.

Central Thailand

Central Thailand includes the Asian metropolis of Bangkok and beautiful islands such as Koh Chang. It is very dry and warm in this part of the country from January to April. You can expect temperatures of 34°C, and it can get even hotter during the day in large cities.

From May to October, you can expect heavy rain showers. Here too, it doesn't rain for days on end, but rather in the afternoon in the form of short thunderstorms. This lowers the temperatures and also makes the rainy season a pleasant time to visit, with favourable prices and few tourists.

Southwest Thailand

Phuket, Krabi and Koh Phi Phi are among Thailand's most popular holiday destinations and are particularly popular with nature lovers. Here in the south-west of Thailand, the rainy season also lasts from May to October and is characterised by more rainy days than the rest of the year. However, temperatures are between 25 and 32°C all year round. This part of the country is therefore safe to visit at any time.

Southeast Thailand

In the months from July to April, temperatures in the south-east are very high, while heavy rain showers can be expected from September to January. European spring and autumn are therefore the best times to visit. However, as prices are very high in spring and the sights and beaches are often overcrowded, it is highly recommended to plan your trip from the end of July.

The best time to travel to Thailand

To summarise, Thailand has a lot to offer all year round. Although the dry season is more recommended for beach holidays and the rainy season for mountain trips, you can travel to Thailand all year round without having to worry too much about the weather. The temperature fluctuations are nowhere near as great as in Europe.

Thailand itself is an incredibly beautiful destination and is ideal as a first long-distance or solo holiday destination. But even experienced travellers return to tropical and adventurous Thailand time and time again. See for yourself!
