When is the best time to travel to Costa Rica?
Costa Rica is the ideal destination for nature lovers and adventurers. Overgrown jungles, colourful animal worlds and impressive volcanoes inspire every visitor. From adventurous rainforests to quiet sandy beaches, there is something for everyone in Costa Rica. Although you can travel to Costa Rica all year round, different seasons are better suited to different activities.
Here you can find out what the ideal time to travel to Costa Rica is for you.
The different seasons in Costa Rica
Costa Rica can be travelled all year round, with only minor temperature fluctuations. However, there are no seasons like in Europe; instead, the year is divided into a rainy season and a dry season. The rainy season begins in May and lasts until October, while the rest of the year is the dry season.
The rainy season
During the European summer, it is the so-called „Green Season“ in Costa Rica. As the name suggests, the rainforest is in full bloom at this time. Although it is called the rainy season, it does not rain all the time, but only in the form of short but heavy showers, usually in the afternoon.
For nature lovers and botany enthusiasts, the rainy season is therefore the best time to experience Costa Rica's magnificent flora. The blooming orchids, of which there are around 1,500 different species in Costa Rica, are particularly beautiful. If you want to watch turtles lay their eggs and later hatch, the best time to do this is between March and November in northern Tortuguero. In late summer, you can watch whales from the southern hemisphere. There are plenty of surfing opportunities in Costa Rica, with the Pacific coast being the most popular. Despite occasional rain showers, the summer months are best for a surfing holiday, as this is when the waves are at their best.
The dry season
Dry season in Costa Rica does not mean that it does not rain at all, but that the rainfall is lower than during the rainy months. This is a very popular time to travel as many visitors want to escape the European winter. Fine sandy beaches and turquoise waters can be enjoyed all year round in Costa Rica. The best time to go swimming in Costa Rica is from December to April. This applies to both the Pacific coast and the Caribbean. Costa Rica offers countless hiking opportunities through beautiful rainforests and foggy mountain landscapes. Enthusiastic hikers should travel during the dry season to avoid wet and slippery hiking trails. In addition, July and August are also suitable for nature excursions, as rainfall is usually low and nature and wildlife are lush and full of life.
Costa Rica is an absolute highlight for animal lovers. Many people are familiar with the famous red and green shimmering bird of the gods, the quetzal, and the best chance of catching a glimpse of the national bird is between December and April. With a bit of luck, you may also spot whales from the northern hemisphere during the same period.
The best time to travel to Costa Rica
Although some months are better suited to certain activities, Costa Rica has a lot to offer all year round and can be travelled to at any time. The water has temperatures between 22 and 32°C all year round and the flora and fauna are unique and breathtaking no matter what time of year. Whether you are a hiker, adventurer or surfer - Costa Rica offers everyone the opportunity for unique experiences.
