Bangkok baby, your 27-day adventure begins! So you've made it to this lively and vibrant city. On the first day you have time to settle in and relax, wash off the stresses and strains of travelling, get to know the rest of your group, also known as TruFam, and explore the area. Maybe you'll check out some markets or try some street food, whatever you fancy! In the evening, it's time for our welcome dinner at one of our favourite restaurants on Khao San Road! Get to know your fellow travellers over a bucket or two (or another drink of your choice). Holiday mode is on and I'm warning you, you'll never want to switch it off again!
Activities: Welcome Dinner
Do you know the film Bridge Over River Kwai? Today we're going to see the bridge over the River Kwai! Before we make our way to the river, we're going to do a bit of shopping, and not just at any market, but at a FLOATING one! Wow, isn't it? Browse through the stalls selling all kinds of food, clothes, souvenirs and even household goods! After exploring the market by longtail boat, we continue on to Kanchanaburi! Once there, we hop on another boat and cruise down the River Kwai, enjoying the sight of the bridge (an insta-worthy moment!). The sun is just setting and there's no better place to watch the sunset than the bridge over the River Kwai! Get ready for all the 10/10 photos you're going to take, because trust us, you don't want to miss this photo opportunity. The view is incredible and definitely worth a spot on your bucket list!
Activities: Floating market & bridge over the River Kwai
Meals: Breakfast
Imagine a 7-tiered, crystal clear blue waterfall surrounded by lush greenery - sounds unreal, right? The Erawan Falls, just an hour away from Kanchanaburi, is basically what you imagine paradise to be. You'd expect to see it on TV and not in real life, but it is real life! We know TLC said don't chase waterfalls, but I think this one time we can be excused because just look at how beautiful it is. Be sure to bring your swimsuit because there are 7 levels where you can cool off. Don't say we didn't spoil you! It's a bit of a walk to the top, but believe us when we say it's TOTALLY worth it. We'll have lunch at the falls, because after all that walking and swimming, you'll need plenty of fluids and energy! Then we'll head back to Kanchanaburi where you can either chill by the pool or explore the town before we meet up for dinner and drinks! Anyone want a bucket list?
Activities: Erewan Waterfalls
Meals: Lunch
Today you have the morning free before we hit the road again! You can spend the morning however you like: by the pool or on another exploration tour through the city. Next up is Ayutthaya, an ancient capital full of culture and history! We hop on our bikes and cycle around the World Heritage Site, which offers fantastic views. We'll also learn about the fascinating history of Ayutthaya and of course the Kingdom of Siam, as Thailand used to be called (a fun fact to tell your friends). After a small snack, we'll take the night train to Chiang Mai! The train is comfortable, you get your own bed with pillows and blankets - comfort is key! So it shouldn't be too difficult to get a decent night's sleep and be in a new place the next morning. Travelling by night train is definitely an experience and should be on your bucket list - a fantastic and very different way to see Thailand. Chiang Mai, we arrive safely.
Activities: Ayutthaya, bike tour & night train
We check into our guesthouse, which is ideally located between the old and new neighbourhoods of Chiang Mai (a win). You'll have some time to relax by the pool or explore Chiang Mai's oldest temple, which is literally right opposite our accommodation (win x2!). Now it's time to visit the most famous and probably most beautiful temple in Chiang Mai, Wat Pra Maha Doi Sutthep. The view is incredible: located high up on the mountain, you have a panoramic view over the city. The 300 steps to get there may be a little arduous, but the panoramic view is well worth it. Trust me, you'll feel like you're on top of the world (literally). After you've taken your snapshots of the insane view and snapped a few for your photo album (you have to), you'll have the afternoon at leisure before we meet up later, just in time for dinner! You can laze by the pool, take a little nap (having fun is exhausting, right?) or continue exploring Chiang Mai!
Activities: Temples & culture in Chiang Mai
Did someone say TruExclusive? Hell yes, we did! You won't get this experience anywhere else. We set off on one of the most popular activities in northern Thailand, trekking through the jungle. The trek doesn't require a high level of fitness, but it's a bit of a challenge, SO we'll have earned our beer afterwards! We will spend a night in village accommodation so that you can experience what life is like for the many traditional farmers in northern Thailand. You'll see that their lives haven't changed much for generations. This is truly a unique experience that you will remember forever. On the trek you can see all kinds of nature and wildlife, maybe even a waterfall or two, amazing scenes and good photo opportunities (important). When we arrive at the hill tribe village, our hosts will cook us a delicious traditional meal and when our stomachs are full, we can sit around the fire and play games or swap stories. Whatever we do, after a busy day it's time to relax!
Activities: Homestay with a "Hill-Tribe"
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Rise and shine! Enjoy the morning in the jungle before we make our way back to Chiang Mai. But of course we have a trick up our sleeve and use a much better means of transport: bamboo rafts! Sick, isn't it? We drift down the river and make a cheeky stop at a waterfall, because we can't get enough of that. Marvel at the wildlife and nature from your raft and see what you can spot. If you're lucky, you might spot a few elephants along the way, so keep your fingers crossed! Hiked through the jungle? Travelled down the river on a bamboo raft? DONE, MATE! Once we're back in Chiang Mai, you can rest up so we can continue our adventure north tomorrow!
Activities: Waterfalls & rafting on Bamboo
Meals: Lunch
Did you know that some people call Chiang Mai the adventure capital? Well, with today's activities, we'll see why! Today we're doing one of our favourite activities that's very popular with tourists: ziplining through the jungle! This will get your heart racing and your adrenaline pumping as you practically fly through the jungle, looking down on everything (if you dare)! Now's your chance to release your inner child and pretend you can fly! Add to that a few rope bridges and abseils and you'll experience the jungle in a way you could never do on foot! You can thank us later when you've made all your friends and family jealous. This really is an unforgettable experience! Keep an eye out for monkeys too, you might spot a few in the treetops! After our exhausting day in the jungle, we have the evening at leisure. Why not visit the night markets? Get some delicious food and browse the gift market to buy souvenirs for friends and family or for yourself.
Activities: Ziplining
Meals: Lunch
After an exciting few days, this morning you have the chance to relax, read a book, have a cocktail or whatever takes your fancy! In the afternoon, pack your bags because we're travelling by bus to the hippie town of Pai! Just three hours outside of Chiang Mai, a very popular destination for backpackers, and we can see why! Full of cool retro bars, market stalls, excellent food and wonderful people from all walks of life. Ahh, life in Pai (sorry we had to!).
Activities: Trip to Pai
Meals: Breakfast
Time for a day trip! Today we set off to see some of the highlights of Pai and its surroundings! We start at the largest cave in Thailand, the Lod Cave, walk through the main chambers and then take a bamboo raft along the river that flows through the cave (depending on the season and accessibility). It's like something out of a film, incredible. Indiana Jones, who? Now it's time to give your muscles a rest as we head to the hot springs, located in the jungle and heated by geothermal activity. Take a dip in the crystal-clear water, treat yourself to a clay mask and enjoy the ultimate relaxation session in the warm temperatures. Afterwards, head to the nearby waterfall with a fantastic view! Who needs a water park when we have something better: a waterfall with a natural slide! We end our day at Pai Canyon, where we have even more fantastic views of the surrounding mountains and jungle. And what's even better: we're there at sunset! *cue Sunset Lover from Petit Biscuit* So take a few photos and enjoy the view before we make our way back to Pai. In the evening, we go to a nice restaurant and a few bars where we can mingle with the other backpackers. After all, we've earned it after a day of sightseeing!
Activities: Hot Springs
Meals: Lunch
Chill day, let's go! After you've had a bit of a rest, you can spend the day lazing around, swimming, playing games, reading a good book or taking a nap in the sun. The choice is yours (but don't forget to apply sun cream). When we've relaxed enough, we head to the Chinese village to sample some tea. "How tea-riffic" (ok, we promise that was the last one!).
Activities: Chill-out by the pool
This morning we're heading back to Chiang Mai! We hope you're ready to become the new Thai master chef, because we're heading to a cookery school to learn about some of the traditional Thai dishes and then prepare them ourselves! Most of Thailand's delicious dishes come from the north, so there's nothing better than learning from the masters themselves, right? First we go to the market, where our guides and teachers show us how to choose the freshest and tastiest ingredients - they have the insider knowledge. Now it's time for us to turn these ingredients into delicious dishes! Don't worry, we'll show you step by step how to recreate the recipes! And here's the best part: you get to taste what you've cooked, so watch out while you cook! It's a fantastic experience and you'll go home with new recipes and new skills, so tell all your friends and family to get ready! The winner wins the chicken dinner (Quorn if you're vegetarian)!
Activities: Cookery class
We all know the Grand Canyon, but do you know Chiang Mai's own Grand Canyon? If not, don't worry, because you will get to know it! This is an ancient archaeological site where sand used to be dug up for building. But now it's an artificial lagoon that has been transformed into an adult playground that we LOVE! There are countless slides, floating chairs, tubes and for the very brave: Cliff jumping, deep sea solo or climbing on the climbing wall. Take your pick! There is a restaurant on site where we can have lunch, refresh ourselves and recharge our batteries! In the evening, we make our way to Chiang Mai for dinner and a drink.
Activities: Paddle boarding & water park
After checking out of our hotel in Chiang Mai, you have some free time to explore Chiang Mai, visit the markets and temples one last time or relax by the pool. When you get back on the night train, you can use the time to recharge your batteries and relax, because it's back to the hustle and bustle of Bangkok!
Activities: Night train to Bangkok
We're back in Bangkok and it's time to explore the capital even further! We hop on a tuk-tuk and head to Bangkok's most famous temples, Wat Arun and Wat Pho, which is home to the infamous reclining Buddha made of gold. We then swap the tuk-tuks for long-tail boats and admire the view of the city from the Chao Praya River - a different way to see Bangkok. Take a look in the water and try to spot the fish, as they are not usually very shy! The rest of the afternoon is at your leisure. You can grab a bite to eat from the street vendors, shop at the market and try your hand at bartering (our TruNinjas can certainly give you a few tips). In the evening we meet up for dinner and then go for a drink on Khao San Road, which is full of backpackers, some would say it's backpacker heaven. You'll have to decide for yourself. Either way, it's a good time because you can't go to Bangkok and not go to Khao San Road.
Activities: Temples, tuk-tuks & nightlife
Alexa, play "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey. Yes, you're taking the midnight train, but not just anywhere! Goodbye Bangkok and hello Khao Sok National Park. So we arrive in Surat Thani and make our way to the tranquil lakes that lie within the national park. Put on your sleep masks, because it's time to get some Zzzs.
Activities: Massage & night train
Meals: Breakfast
If we had a list of the 7 true wonders of the world, Khao Sok would be on it. After arriving early at Surat Thani railway station and a short drive to the national park, we board a longtail boat on the lake and cruise through some of the most breathtaking scenery you've ever seen. Imagine low clouds hovering over the limestone mountains surrounding the emerald green lake. Dreamlike, isn't it? The temperature is perfect for taking a dip, and that's exactly what we'll be doing on the way to the floating bungalows. Yes, that's right, we said floating bungalows. Tonight we're staying in a floating resort on a lake that looks like something out of Jurassic Park. I told you, we're not average. The afternoon is yours to relax by the lake, float in an inner tube with a beer or other drink in hand, read a book or explore the lake in kayaks. After sunset, we'll be treated to a delicious Thai buffet in the floating restaurant and bar. It doesn't get much better than this. Or does it? Stay tuned and find out!
Activities: Kayaking, swimming & tubing
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
What could be better than a floating resort on a crystal-clear freshwater lake surrounded by mountains and jungle? I don't know, but our next destination comes pretty close. Bottle Beach, one of our favourite beaches in the world. It's a stunningly beautiful little beach that can only be reached by boat (or via a jungle road if you have a badass off-road vehicle), so we pretty much have the place to ourselves and another room with a view! Did we mention that this is a TruExclusive? Very few people stay here and experience it the way you should. And even fewer have the opportunity to experience it Tru-style. It's almost impossible to describe how cool this place is. So here are a few of the things you can do here in paradise with your new mates (apart from lazing on the beach): You can play volleyball, swim or kayak, hike to the viewpoint or frolic on the beach with one of the friendly resort dogs. In the evening, we have dinner on the beach (of course) and then cocktails around the campfire with our own fire show. Luckily, the bar here stays open as long as we stay up, so we can take it easy and enjoy a good night's sleep by the sea or rock the private beach party into the early hours. Get your dancing shoes on, beaches! Could it get any better than this? No, probably not, but never say never.
Activities: Fun on the beach
Meals: Breakfast
The sound of waves crashing on the beach will probably be the first thing you hear when you wake up (unless you have a noisy flatmate). We've planned a gloriously lazy morning, so as always, there's no need to stress. You can sleep in, enjoy the beach, hike through the jungle or to a viewpoint and generally make the most of your idyllic surroundings and recharge your batteries. In the afternoon, we visit a local gym for an introductory lesson in the ancient art of Muay Thai (Thai boxing), Thailand's national sport. After the trainers have turned us all into future champions and we've worked up a bit of a sweat, we check into our new home, where we can freshen up and relax, jump into the pool or the sea, or even go to bed for a quick nap! The resort where we are staying is, of course, a great little place right on the beach with the perfect Koh Phangan island flair. Good thing we're here for the next two nights. With a great choice of restaurants, bars, parties and beaches, we can eat, drink and do whatever we want over the next few evenings. Koh Phangan has it all! Have fun!
Activities: Muay Thai Class & Look-Out Point
Today you are a pirate. You can pretend to be one, because we're going sailing and taking you on a tour of this wonderful island. There's a reason why so many of the TruCrew live here on Koh Phangan. We'll sail around the island's coastline, stopping at some of the best snorkelling spots on the island to watch the marine life and cool off. Lunch is served on the boat and there's plenty of room to spread out and soak up some rays. We get back ashore around sunset, just in time to fuel up for dinner and drinks on our last night on Koh Phangan. The island is known for its party scene. So if the group feels like partying hard on the last night on Koh Phangan, we can find something suitable. The possibilities are endless!
Activities: Island boat trip
Meals: Lunch
Say goodbye to the magical island of Koh Phangan and say hello to its pretty little neighbour Koh Tao. Here's a fun fact for you: Koh Tao stands for Turtle Island! Until recently, Koh Tao was only home to coconut farms and fishing villages. The island is therefore still relatively undeveloped and, like Koh Phangan, is bursting with nature. That changed for Koh Tao when diving became fashionable and people discovered a number of phenomenal dive sites and coral reefs around the little beauty. Today, many people visit Koh Tao for the diving, the beautiful beaches and the laid-back lifestyle. When we arrive on the island, we check into our hotel near Sairee Beach, which is now lined with cool little restaurants and beach bars (and of course many diving schools). Spend the afternoon by the pool, exploring the town or hitting the beach. In the evening, we'll hit some of the beach bars and see where the night takes us!
Activities: Chill day
Today we look at what snorkelling and diving on Koh Tao is all about (it's what the island is famous for after all), and we visit the beautiful island of Koh NangYuan. We'll provide snorkelling gear, lunch and drinks on the boat, but if you'd rather do a dive instead, speak to your Travel Ninja (elite, badass tour guide) or another member of the Tru Crew and we'll arrange it for you. If you prefer to top up your tan on the boat and then explore the wonders of the ocean below, then anything is possible! You can also hike to the viewpoint to take some envious snaps or tan your body on the beautiful beach. In the evening, we'll go for dinner at one of the island's nice restaurants and have a few beers (or cocktails, even water if you want) at one of the many small bars on Sairee Beach. What a day!
Activities: Koh Nang Yuang day trip
Meals: Lunch
Our last day in this little paradise and luckily we have options. We head to Tanote Bay for those who want to spend the day on this little gem of a beach. If you'd rather keep the adrenaline pumping, we can help you organise one of the extreme sports activities on Koh Tao. From rock climbing to the more common and much wetter activities such as scuba diving or water sports. Or you can stay in bed all day until we check out. We won't do it, but it's your beautiful trip ;-)
Today, after spending the morning relaxing with the last bit of Koh Tao magic, we head off to our next incredible destination! They just keep getting better and better! We arrive in Phi Phi in the afternoon after a fantastic speedboat ride. Once we've arrived and checked in, you'll have some free time in the early evening before meeting up for dinner together on this fantastic island! The evenings are always interesting when you're in Phi Phi, because like Koh Tao it has a very relaxed, „islandy“ atmosphere, but also lots of young backpackers and beach goers, so naturally there's a lively nightlife with beach parties that often last into the early hours. So what goes on depends on you and your family.
Activities: Boat to Phi Phi
Who loves Leo? And we're not talking about Thai beer. Although we love that too. We mean Leo Dicaprio, and you can admit it, you love him. We do too, and today you'll be following in his marvellous footsteps for a day. After a relaxing morning, we hop on another boat to visit a breathtakingly beautiful place called Maya Bay, made famous by Leo's famous film "The Beach", which was shot here many moons ago. Awesome, right? Don't worry, that's our claim to fame too. Other than that, we'll go snorkelling, visit other cool places like the Viking Cave and Monkey Beach (yes, there are actually monkeys there), have lunch and watch the sunset from the boat. Another fantastic day organised for you by TruTravels. You are very welcome!
Activities: Phi Phi boat trip, monkey beach, snorkelling & The Beach (when open)
Meals: Lunch
No, we weren't just swearing. Phuket (pronounced puket or pooket) is another Thai island. The biggest, to be exact. Well, this tour is called "Total Thailand", so what did you expect? We end our trip on this crazy island for two main reasons. Firstly, because it has an airport and plenty of hotels and transport options, which makes your life easier. Secondly, because you have to experience it once if you come to Thailand. It is a MUST. We live near Patong Beach, a lively centre with lots of tourists and lots of locals on motorbikes and taxis. There is plenty to do and the last afternoon is free to relax, explore the area and prepare for the last night with the group. They're your BFFL's (best friends for life) now, and probably for longer, so you can be sure it's going to be a really good night. Cheers to you and your last night in Thailand.
Activities: Shopping & Bangla Road (nightlife)
The last day. Tears on all sides. I can't type any more...
If you need to leave us after the trip to travel home or to another place, we will of course help you with everything, just tell us where you need to go and when. But of course we would prefer you to stay in this wonderful part of the world with your new TruFam. The last 27 days have been surreal and we hope to see you again soon for another adventure. Totally Thailand, complete it mate! Until next time, TruFam.
Activities: Check-Out
