Today is all about discovering everything Tokyo has in store. First we visit one of the oldest temples in the country, the Senso-ji Temple, before heading to the Meiji Shrine. The colourful, eclectic Harajuku is next on the agenda before we head to Shibuya Crossing, the busiest intersection in the world. After dinner tonight, we head to one of the tiny bars in the Shinjuku neighbourhood. (F)
Accommodation: Grids Tokyo Ueno Hotel & Hostel
The organised chaos of the huge and impressive Tsukiji fish market is first on the agenda. We then meet with a sushi master to try out the art of sushi rolling before heading to the futuristic sights and sounds of Akihabara. Akihabara, also known as the "Electric City", is famous for its arcades, maid cafés, Japanese photo booths and all things modern (F, M)

Now's your chance to experience Japan's famous bullet train for real. Leaving Tokyo at over 200 km/h, we arrive in Nagano just in time to try out the ancient art of origami, followed by a relaxing soak in an onsen, a volcanic hot spring. Tonight we stay like the locals in our traditional Japanese ryokan, where we sleep on tatami mats and comfortable futon beds. (F)
Accommodation: Shibu Hotel
Today we will venture into the mountains to see the region's famous snow monkeys or Japanese macaques. These red-faced mischief-makers play among the trees in the summer months and warm themselves by bathing in the natural hot springs in winter. Whilst enjoying the fresh mountain air, we will then take our time to view the beautiful lakes and forests of Shiga Kogen National Park. (F, M)
Accommodation: Shibu Hotel
This morning we board the high-speed train again, this time to Hakone. Famous for its hot springs, natural beauty and (of course) Mount Fuji. We check into our hotel and enjoy the scenery. (F)
Accommodation: Emblem Flow Hostel
You may not be walking the plank, but you'll be exploring Hakone by pirate ship (and cable car) this morning and keeping your eyes peeled for a view of snow-capped Mount Fuji. Then we continue on to Osaka and explore the vibrant canal neighbourhood of Dotonbori. Over dinner, we fortify ourselves for a night out Osaka-style. (F,A)
Accommodation: Lub D Osaka Hotel
This morning you'll have time to yourself to relax and maybe do a little shopping before we head out as a group to visit the 400-year-old Osaka Castle. It looks like something straight out of a fairy tale and you'll have a hard time not feeling envious as we explore the grounds and hear stories and legends, including those of the country's most famous warriors, the samurai. (F)
Accommodation: Lub D Osaka Hotel
Are you ready for something really special? Today we have just the thing - an overnight stay in a 1000-year-old Buddhist temple. We leave Osaka behind us and drive up into the mountains to the town of Koyasan, where we are welcomed into the temple by the monks who live there. They teach us meditation, serve us their traditional food and take us on a night-time walk through Japan's largest cemetery. (F,A)
Accommodation: Ekoin Temple
It's an early start today, but it's worth watching the Buddhist monks perform their morning prayer ritual and fire ceremony. We are then served breakfast before travelling on to our final destination, Kyoto. After checking into our boutique hostel, you'll have time to yourself to explore Japan's former capital. (F)
Accommodation: Piece Hostel Sanjo
Green, lush and vibrant - the famous bamboo forest of Arashiyama is our first stop today. After taking photos, we continue to the luxurious Golden Pavilion, so named because it is completely clad in gold, before ending the day in the Gion district, known as the home of Japan's beautiful and mysterious geishas. (F)
Accommodation: Piece Hostel Sanjo
To round off our trip today, we visit the famous torii gates of Fushimi-Inari. The orange-coloured gates are one of the most famous and most photographed shrines in Japan and stretch all the way up the mountainside. In the afternoon, you will learn how to wield a traditional samurai sword under the watchful eye of a sensei, a descendant of the samurai. (F)
